Testosterone Blood Test Terminology...
Total testosterone is an indicator of the total amount of testosterone in the blood. If this level is low, you may be suffering from a low sexual libido, reduced muscle mass and strength and a low mood.
Free testosterone indicates the amount of testosterone that is free to be used by the cells in the body. In some cases total testosterone can be normal whilst free testosterone is low. In these cases a man with low free testosterone will experience the same symptoms as someone with low total testosterone.
This is normally because there are higher levels of hormones such as SHBG (sex binding hormone globulin) which binds to testosterone preventing it from being used by the body.
Oestradiol is a predominantly female hormone found in smaller amounts in men. If high it can lead to similar symptoms to low testosterone.
Prolactin - high prolactin levels in men may be linked to low sexual desire and erectile dysfunction
Luteinizing Hormone can indicate any issues with your sperm.
FSH or Follicle Stimulating Hormone is one of the hormones essential to pubertal development and the function of women's ovaries and men's testes.
Albumin is a protein produced by your liver.
SHBG is a protein made by your liver which binds to your testosterone.
Haematocrit is a measure of the percentage of red blood cells to the total blood volume. A low haematocrit may indicate anaemia, nutritional deficiency and various other disorders.
Thyroid - the thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolic rate as well as heart and digestive function, muscle control, brain development, mood and bone maintenance.
Vitamin D - people with vitamin D deficiency may be susceptible to respiratory tract infections like colds, bronchitis and pneumonia; experience fatigue, bone and back pain, depression, impaired wound healing, bone weakness, hair loss and muscle pain.
Vitamin B12 - conditions that can increase B12 levels include liver disease (such as cirrhosis or hepatitis), Myeloproliferative disorders (for example, polycythemia vera and chronic myelogenous leukemia). Conditions that can result in a Vitamin B12 deficiency include pernicious anemia, Crohn's disease, celiac disease, bacterial growth, or a parasite, plus some immune system disorders.
Folate - a deficiency in folate can result in problems with the nervous system, temporary infertility, heart conditions (and pregnancy complications in women).
HbA1C or Hemoglobin A1C - Higher levels of HbA1c are found in people with persistently elevated blood sugar which may be an indicator for diabetes.
What To Expect From Your At-Home Testosterone Blood Test
Our finger-prick sample collection kit is quick and easy to use and will be sent to you in the post so you can check your testosterone levels in the privacy of your own home. Simply follow the instructions and then post your sample to our lab in the prepaid envelope provided.
If your testosterone levels are low, we will offer you a second blood test. The lab results are usually available within three days and you will then be offered a consultation with a qualified doctor. Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate medication in line with your blood test results. You will receive these medications securely through the post, with clear instructions on how to administer these medications.
Follow up blood test monitoring and doctor consultations will be provided. Patients require blood tests at six weeks, three months, six months and then every six months thereafter. Your doctor consultations will be at three and six months. It goes without saying that your results will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
